Sittwe , formerly Akjab ( Burmese စစ်တွေမြို့ , BGN / PCGN : sittwemyo) is the capital of the Rakhaing or Arakan state in Myanmar and at the same time forms the main port on the east coast of Akjab Island and at the mouth of the Arakan River (or Kualadan) .
Sittwe has a convenient location for shipping due to the large and safe harbor.
Sittwe came under British rule in 1826 through the Treaty of Jandabu . In particular, there was a lot of trade in rice here . The British writer Hector Hugh Munro was born in Akjab in 1870 .
