The Mandalay region ( မန္တလေးတိုင်းဒေသကြီး , BGN / PCGN : mandaledaingdethagyi ; Mandalay division until 2008 ) is one of the 15 administrative units of Myanmar .

geography

The Mandalay region is bordered by the Sagaing Region to the north, Shan State to the east, and Kayin State and the Bago region to the south . In the west it borders on the Magwe region . The capital of the Mandalay region is the city of the same name, Mandalay .

The new capital of Myanmar, Naypyidaw , was in the Mandalay region until 2010, but was then separated from it as the Union Territory of Naypyidaw .

economy

The Mandalay region is one of the most important regions of Myanmar. Agriculture plays the biggest role, especially the cultivation of rice, corn, wheat, sesame, cotton, tobacco, chilli, sugar cane and vegetables. There are also textile mills, sugar and rice mills and gem mines in the area of ​​the Mandalay region. Tourism is also playing an increasingly important role, especially since, in addition to the old royal city of Mandalay, there are some important historical sites such as Ava , Amarapura and Bagan , as well as the tourist attractions of Mount Popa and the city of Pyin U Lwin in the area of ​​the Mandalay region.
