Pyin U Lwin ( Burmese ပြင် ဦး လွင် , BGN / PCGN : pyin-ulwin; formerly Maymyo ) is a city in the Mandalay Division of Myanmar , 67 km east of Mandalay at an altitude of 1,070 m. The estimated population in 2006 was 120,149.
history
The British Colonel May established a garrison town in the village of Pyin U Lwin after the 3rd British-Burmese War of 1885 . The result was “Maystadt” (“Maymyo”) after the Burmese word myo for “city”. The city has a cool climate and was used as a summer residence by the British until the Second World War. After the 1988 military coup , the city was renamed Pyin U Lwin.
After Burma gained independence, the army established the Defense Services Academy (DSA) in Maymyo . Well-known are the botanical gardens established by the English, National Kandawgyi Gardens , the clock tower and the strange horse-drawn carriages, which are atypical for Burma.
In June 2006, construction work began on the IT center Yadanabon Information and Communication Technology Park, also known as Yadanabon Cyber City or Yadanabon Teleport. The development and production of hardware and software will take place on the 40 km² (10,000 acres ) site in Yadanabon Myothit, not far from Pyin U Lwin. The center opened on December 14, 2007.
