Martin Zimmermann (ancient historian)
Martin Zimmermann (born November 1, 1959 in Güldenstein ) is a German ancient historian and author of children's and youth literature .
Martin Zimmermann grew up in Flensburg , where he attended the old grammar school until his Abitur in 1978 and studied history and German at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel , where he passed the first state examination in 1987. In 1990 he received his doctorate in ancient history at the University of Tübingen , after which he was a research assistant at Frank Kolb's chair until 1997 , and in 1997 he received his habilitation there . From 1997 to 2002 Zimmermann was an academic councilor in Tübingen. Since 2002 he has been a full professor of ancient history at the University of Munich .
Zimmermann's main research area is the historical study of Asia Minor . Since 1989 Zimmermann has been involved in archaeological field research in the area of the ancient Polis Kyaneai . From 1999 to 2005 he was head of a DFG project entitled “Ports of Minor Asia and their hinterland. Paths of Acculturation on the Lycian Coast ”with annual field research in Lycia . Since 2006 he has been coordinator of the priority program 1209 “The Hellenistic Polis as a Way of Life” of the DFG. Zimmermann is the spokesman for the Graduate School “Forms of Prestige in Ancient Cultures”. He is a full member of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI), a member of the Commission for Ancient History and Epigraphy of the DAI and the Scientific Advisory Board of the Gerda Henkel Foundation . He has been a member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences since 2013 . At the 53rd German Historians' Day in Munich in 2021, he will be the spokesman for the local committee.
