Gregor Weber (historian)

Gregor Weber (born July 9, 1961 in Offenburg ) is a German ancient historian .

Life

Gregor Weber studied history, Greek and Catholic theology at the Universities of Freiburg and Vienna from 1980 to 1987 . Even before the state examination he received a scholarship in the basic funding of the Cusanuswerk episcopal study grant . The foundation also supported his PhD Poetry and Court Society , supervised by Hans-Joachim Gehrke . The reception of contemporary history at the court of the first three Ptolemies at the University of Freiburg in 1991. During his doctorate, he held a teaching position in Freiburg in the winter semester and in 1991 was a member of the Freiburg DFG special research area 321 (" Transitions and areas of tension from written to oral ", Subproject C9, Ancient History).

In 1991 he first became a research assistant and from 1993 assistant at the chair for ancient history at the University of Eichstätt . In the summer semester he also had a teaching position at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg . From 1995 to 1999 Weber worked on the sub-project “ Inscriptiones Graecae Eystettenes. Corpus of the Greek Inscriptions from Bithynia-Pontus ”within the DFG priority program“ Historical Basic Research on Ancient Asia Minor ”. In 1998 he completed his habilitation in Eichstätt with the thesis " Emperor, Dreams and Visions in Principality and Late Antiquity ", for which he also received the Habilitation Prize from the Eichstätter University Society.

In the winter semester 1998/99 Weber represented the chair holder at Freiburg University. In 1999 he also became senior research assistant at the Chair of Ancient History at the Catholic University of Eichstätt. After the substitution of a professorship in the summer semester 2001 and the subsequent winter semester at the University of Erfurt , the appointment as university professor for ancient history to that professorship followed. As early as 2003 he moved to the University of Augsburg , where he succeeds Gunther Gottliebs as full professor of ancient history.

Weber's main research interests are ancient and modern democracy, the history of Hellenism , dreams and visions in ancient times, ancient courts and monarchies, historical anthropology, and urban development and water supply for cities. In 2000 Weber received the price of the Volksbank Eichstätt for the interdisciplinary research and exhibition project The Curse of Inflation . From 2005 to 2009 he was a board member of the Mommsen Society . Since 2006 he has been a liaison professor of the Cusanuswerk bishop's scholarship at the University of Augsburg; from 2009 to 2015 he acted as director of the Augsburg Institute for European Cultural History, from autumn 2012 to November 2015 as managing director. For the winter semester 2014/15 he received a fellowship from the Jakob Fugger Center. Research College for Transnational Studies at the University of Augsburg. From October 2015 to October 2017 he was dean of the philological and historical faculty of the University of Augsburg, then vice dean for two years. He is currently a member of the University Council and the Extended University Management, as well as a member of the DFG Review Board Ancient Cultures (2020–2023).

Since 2005, together with Jürgen Malitz, he has been the editor of the Gnomon Bibliographical Database (GBD) and, together with Werner Rieß, of the "Ancient History Research (AGF)" series published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht (Göttingen), and since 2013 of the "Colloquia Augustana" series im Publishing house de Gruyter (Berlin).

In 2013/14 Weber and Reinhard Förtsch from the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) in Berlin headed the project “Bibliographic Databases as a Visualized Knowledge Network”, which was funded by the European CLARIN program . The aim is to create a common platform for the Gnomon Bibliographic Database and the ZENON catalog of the DAI. He is also a member of the advisory board of the Propylaeum Specialized Information Service Classical Studies and, together with Andreas Hartmann, heads a sub-project of the new, DFG-funded Specialized Information Service (FID) Classical Studies to migrate the GBD to a new platform, which is in a new funding phase (2019-2021), again in cooperation with the Bavarian State Library in Munich. He is currently head of the DFG project Basileus eirenophylax - Peace Culture (s) and Monarchical Representation in the Hellenistic World (2019-2022).

Gregor Weber is married and has two daughters; he is also a member of SC Freiburg .
