Pedro Barceló

Pedro Barceló (born April 30, 1950 in Vinaròs , Province of Castellón , Spain ) is a Spanish-German ancient historian .

Pedro Barceló studied at the Albert Ludwig University in Freiburg im Breisgau , where he received his doctorate in 1980 . From 1979 to 1988 he was a research assistant, since 1982 university assistant, at the Catholic University of Eichstätt , where he completed his habilitation in 1986 . After holding various professorships and visiting professorships, he received a Heisenberg grant from the German Research Foundation (DFG) at the University of Augsburg in 1992 , but was appointed professor at the newly founded University of Erfurt that same year . From 1994 to September 2015 he held the chair for Ancient History at the University of Potsdam . His successor was the Italian Filippo Carlà-Uhink .

As a visiting professor, Barceló has taught at the University of South Africa in Pretoria , the University of Valencia , the University of Sofia , the Jaume I University in Castellón and the University of Barcelona . In 1995 he was appointed a corresponding member of the Real Academia de la Historia in Madrid. The University of Jaume I awarded him an honorary doctorate in 2006 .

Barceló's main research areas are the history of Carthage and Carthaginian and Roman Hispania as well as Hellenism , the religious history of the Roman Empire, especially the processes of religious change, breaks in tradition and confrontations, in particular the role of Christianity in the old world and the ancient marginal cultures.
