Gunther Gottlieb
Gunther Gottlieb (born February 3, 1935 in Hanau ) is a German ancient historian .
Life
Gunther Gottlieb studied history, classical philology and political science at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main , the FU Berlin and the Albert Ludwigs University in Freiburg . In 1962 he was in Frankfurt with the work The Relationship of Extra-Herodoteic Tradition to Herodotus. Analyzes of historical materials from Greek history doctorate . He then served as a research assistant at the University of Heidelberg , where he in 1971 on the subject of Ambrose of Milan and Emperor Gratian habilitated . He taught as a lecturer until 1975 at the University of Augsburg to the Chair of Ancient History appeal was. He taught there until his retirement in 2001. His successor was Gregor Weber in 2003 .
From 1993 to 1995 and April 1999 to March 2001, Gottlieb was Vice Rector of the University and in this function was responsible for the area of “Teaching and Students”. According to the new Bavarian higher education law, he formed the governing body of the university with the Chancellor and another Vice Rector during his second term of office. Since 1978 he has coordinated the collaboration between the University of Augsburg and the Josip Juraj Strossmayer University Osijek in Osijek . He also received an honorary doctorate from Osijek University in 1993 .
Gottlieb's main research interests are in the areas of Roman provincial history, early Christianity and the old church, as well as their relationship to the ancient state.
