Propylaeum is a specialized information service for ancient studies operated by the Heidelberg University Library and the Bavarian State Library in Munich . The information and service portal is closely aligned with the needs of researchers.

background

As part of the DFG program “Specialized Information Services for Science”, the University Library of Heidelberg and the Bavarian State Library in Munich have been expanding their existing offerings into a joint specialist information service for classical studies since January 2016.

The name Propylaeum is supposed to refer to Propylaion or Propylon , a gateway at the entrance to Greek sanctuaries. In relation to the portal, Propylaeum is the gateway to the relevant information on ancient history. The pillars of the gate building, which can also be found in the logo of the portal, symbolize the canon of subjects of ancient studies .

history

Propylaeum emerged from the Virtual Library, the construction of which was funded from June 1, 2006 to 2010 by the German Research Foundation (DFG). The BSB Munich, the UB Heidelberg and the Institute for Classical Philology (Latin Studies) of the Humboldt University in Berlin were also involved . From October 2009 to December 2015, Ancient Near Eastern Studies, the former special collection area of Ancient Near Eastern Studies at the Tübingen University Library , was integrated. Other cooperation partners were the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) and the Chair of Ancient History at the Catholic University of Eichstätt .

In the course of restructuring measures by the DFG, the platform was converted to the specialist information service for classical studies.
