List of ancient historians at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The list of ancient historians at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich includes all university lecturers who taught ancient history at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . This normally includes all regular university professors who were allowed to give lectures, i.e. who had completed their habilitation . In particular, these are full professors , non-scheduled professors , junior professors , guest professors , honorary professors , chair representatives and private lecturers . Old historians of the middle level (lecturers: assistants and employees ) are only taken into account in justified exceptional cases (e.g. as academic advisors for life).

Ancient history was mainly offered since the middle of the 19th century, albeit by classical scholars and historians from other areas. The decision to set up an ancient history chair at LMU was relatively late, in 1899. In 1901 teaching was started by the first holder of the chair, Robert von Pöhlmann , who was appointed in 1900 . Initially, the chair was closely linked to Classical Philology . The four professors of Classical Philology and the Professor of Ancient History shared not only the rooms, but also the only assistant. With each new appointment, the situation could improve in the first few decades. In 1967, Siegfried Lauffer's Extraordinary Professorship was converted into a second chair in ancient history after being rejected for a professorship in Salzburg. The second chair had a special emphasis on economic and social history. Between the second half of the 1960s and the early 1980s, the institute was very well equipped. There were two chairs (C4), two academic advisors, four academic assistants and two full-time secretaries. In 1978 another C3 professorship was added. The personnel situation had deteriorated somewhat towards the end of the 1990s. The seminar had two C4 and one C3 professorships, two academic advisors for life, three academic assistants and two part-time secretaries.

At the beginning of the 21st century, the C3 professorship also ceased, so that two C4 professors, two academic advisors for life, two academic assistants and a part-time secretary were part of the regular operations. A turning point in 2015 was the establishment of an additional third chair, an Alexander von Humboldt Professorship for the Ancient History of the Near and Middle East. In addition to this thematic expansion of Ancient History, the number of employees in the department more than doubled.

The first column shows the name of the person and their life data, the second column shows entry into the university, and the third column shows their departure. Column four lists the highest position achieved at LMU. At other universities, the corresponding lecturer may have made an even more extensive scientific career. The next column lists special features, the career path or other information relating to the university or institute. The last column shows pictures of the lecturers, which is currently difficult due to the image rights.
