Peter Robert Franke

Peter Robert Franke (born November 2, 1926 in Lüdenscheid ; † December 30, 2018 in Berlin ) was a German ancient historian and numismatist .

Life

Franke studied ancient history with Helmut Berve in Munich and Erlangen and received his doctorate in 1956 with a thesis on Epirus . In 1961 he completed his habilitation in Erlangen with a thesis on the coins of Epirus and worked there as a private lecturer in ancient history. In 1964 he became senior scientific advisor at the Athens Department of the German Archaeological Institute , and in 1967 he was a lecturer in Munich. In the same year he accepted a professorship for Ancient History at Saarland University , which he held until his retirement in 1994. He was a member of the Numismatic Commission of the Länder in the Federal Republic of Germany and an honorary member of the Bavarian Numismatic Society .

Ancient numismatics was a focus of Franke's work. In 1964, for example, he published a widespread illustrated book on The Greek Mint with photographs by Max Hirmer . He worked on several volumes of the series Die Fundmünzen der Romanzeit in Deutschland and Sylloge nummorum Graecorum . In 1988 he received the Medal of the Royal Numismatic Society and in 1992 the Archer M. Huntington Medal . Franke was a full member of the German Archaeological Institute.
