Heinrich Schlange-Schöningen

Heinrich Schlange-Schöningen (born April 26, 1960 in Lüneburg ) is a German ancient historian .

Heinrich Schlange-Schöningen's grandfather was the politician and diplomat Hans Schlange-Schöningen . After graduating from high school in Göttingen in 1979 , he studied history, religious studies and philosophy at the Free University of Berlin and in Bordeaux from 1982 to 1987 . There he completed his studies in 1988 with the Maîtrise d'Histoire de l'Université de Bordeaux . From 1989 to 1994 he was a research assistant at Alexander Demandt's chair for late antiquity at the Free University of Berlin. In 1993 he received his doctorate from Demandt with a thesis on education in late antiquity. From 1996 to 2002 he worked as a research assistant at Ernst Baltrusch's Chair for Roman History, also at the Free University of Berlin. In 2003 he completed his habilitation in Berlin and represented a senior assistant for ancient history at the Technical University of Dresden . In 2004, Schlange-Schöningen was a member of the School of Historical Studies at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton , New Jersey . Until the summer semester of 2006, he taught as a private lecturer for ancient history at the Free University of Berlin, especially on the Roman Empire and Late Antiquity. Since the winter semester 2006/2007 he has been teaching at Saarland University in Saarbrücken ; initially as a W2 professor for ancient history. After turning down an offer at Mannheim University in 2010 , he became a W3 professor in Saarbrücken.

Schlange-Schöningen specializes in Roman history in the imperial era and late antiquity and is also interested in the history of science in the ancient world . He is currently working on Roman social and religious history and the history of Constantine the Great .
