Johannes Nollé

Johannes Nollé (born October 22, 1953 in Haaren (now Aachen )) is a German ancient historian, epigraphist and numismatist.

Johannes Nollé studied history , German , pedagogy and political science at RWTH Aachen from 1973 to 1978 . In 1978 he passed the 1st state examination for teaching at grammar schools. From 1976 to 1981 he studied Classical Philology , Ancient History and Classical Archeology at the University of Cologne , where he also received his doctorate in 1981 with a thesis on the subject of Nundinas instituere et habere. Epigraphic evidence of the establishment and design of rural markets in Africa and the province of Asia took place. In Cologne he also worked from 1979 to 1982 on the project " Inscriptions of Greek Cities from Asia Minor ", in which the inscriptions of the city of Ephesus were researched under the direction of Reinhold Merkelbach . From 1982 to 1985, Nollé was curator of the papyrus collection at the University of Cologne. Several extended research trips to Turkey also took place during this period. In 1985 he became a research assistant at the Commission for Ancient History and Epigraphy of the German Archaeological Institute in Munich. In 1991 he completed his habilitation in ancient history at the University of Bremen as well as the rehabilitation and subsequent teaching activity at the University of Munich . He has been an adjunct professor there since 1998. Nollé is a member of the board of the Bavarian Numismatic Society .

Nollé's work focuses on the history of Asia Minor from the Hittite period to the early Middle Ages , the economic and religious history of the Roman Empire, and in particular epigraphy and numismatics . Together with Sencer Şahin , he founded the ancient science journal Gephyra in Istanbul in 2004 . Magazine for the history and culture of antiquity in the area of ​​today's Turkey .
