Harald Küthmann

Harald Carl Albert Küthmann (born January 31, 1922 in Hanover ; † April 1, 2013 in Memmingen ) was a German numismatist .

Life

Harald Küthmann, son of the museum director Carl Küthmann and his wife Hedwig, b. Kusel, who holds a doctorate in classical archaeologist, attended the Ratsgymnasium in Hanover from 1931 , after his father's dismissal and relocation to Grenzach from 1938 to 1940, the humanistic grammar school in Basel . Because the border was closed, he passed his Abitur at the grammar school in Lörrach in the spring of 1941 . Then he did an apprenticeship as a commercial clerk in Hanover.

Since the winter semester 1945/46 he has been studying Classical Archeology , Ancient History and Classical Philology at the University of Basel . He received his doctorate in Basel in December 1953 with a thesis on late Hellenistic-early Roman Toreutics under Karl Schefold . From January 1, 1954 to December 31, 1955, he worked as a research assistant for the research project Fund coins from the Roman period in Germany ; from January 1, 1956 to September 30, 1957 as a research assistant at the Roman department of the Roman-Germanic Central Museum in Mainz . Since October 1, 1957, he has been the curator of ancient coins at the State Coin Collection in Munich . From 1969 until his retirement at the end of April 1984 he was director of this collection. He was a member of the Bavarian Numismatic Society , and also taught as a visiting lecturer for numismatics at the University of Munich .
