Christian Witschel

Christian Witschel (born December 17, 1966 in Würzburg ) is a German ancient historian .

Christian Witschel studied ancient history, new history, prehistory and early history as well as classical archeology at the universities of Berlin and Oxford from 1986 to 1993 . From 1994 to 1999 Witschel worked as a research assistant at the Department of Ancient History at Heidelberg University. In 1998 he received his doctorate under Manfred Clauss with the thesis The West of the Roman Empire in the 3rd Century AD at the University of Frankfurt . Witschel then worked as a research assistant in Munich from 1999 to 2003 . From 2003 to 2005 Witschel was a research assistant in Munich. In 2004 he completed his habilitation there on the subject of propaganda for the Princeps? Mechanisms of Imperial Representation in the Imperium Romanum . Witschel has been Full Professor of Ancient History at Heidelberg University since 2005. His research interests include the history of the 3rd century AD, Roman social and economic history, and Latin epigraphy . In 1999 he was awarded the Prize for the Promotion of the Humanities (Friedrich Sperl Prize).
