Alfred von Domaszewski

Alfred von Domaszewski (born October 30, 1856 in Timisoara , Austrian Empire , † March 25, 1927 in Munich ) was an Austrian ancient historian .

Alfred von Domaszewski was the son of the engineer Victor von Domaszewski and Pauline Preyss, who died in the Adige Valley in 1881 . He did his doctorate in philology in Vienna and was then a grammar school teacher at the Academic Gymnasium in Vienna, from 1886 also a private lecturer. On behalf of the Berlin Academy of Sciences and funded by the Vienna Ministry of Education, he continued to work with Carl Humann in Smyrna on the reconstruction of the Monumentum Ancyranum from 1882 .

In 1884 he was employed as an adjunct curator at the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna . In 1887 he switched to the newly created chair for ancient history at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg as a professor . Together with Rudolf Ernst Brünnow he created the first map of the ancient rock city of Petra in today's Jordan . His work History of the Roman Emperors has been published several times .

Ernst Kantorowicz was one of his students .
