Fritz Gschnitzer

Fritz Gschnitzer (born January 6, 1929 in Innsbruck ; † November 27, 2008 in Neckargemünd ) was an Austrian ancient historian .

Fritz Gschnitzer came from a Tyrolean family of scholars. His father was the lawyer Franz Gschnitzer , his brother the surgeon Franz Gschnitzer .

From 1947 he studied Classical Studies, Ancient Near Eastern Studies and Indo-European Studies in Innsbruck , where he received his doctorate from Franz Hampl in 1951 with the topic The communities of the Middle East during the Achaemenid period and in 1957 he completed his habilitation with the work Dependent Places in Ancient Greece . From 1955 to 1962 he was a university lecturer at the Institute for Linguistics at the University of Innsbruck. In 1962 he became a full professor of ancient history at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg ; he held the office until his retirement in 1997. Wolfgang Blösel was one of his academic students in Heidelberg .

Gschnitzer was a full member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences . He dealt mainly with the Greek constitutional and social history, the Mycenaean philology and the history of the ancient Orient as well as Greek onomastics and epigraphy , for which extraordinary linguistic knowledge enabled him.
