Manfred Clauss (born August 16, 1945 in Cologne ) is a German ancient historian .

From 1965 to 1970 Manfred Clauss studied Catholic theology , history and philosophy at the universities of Cologne , Bonn and Marburg . In 1970 he passed the first state examination in philology in Catholic theology and history and became a research assistant at the University of Bonn and administrator of the position of a research assistant at the Ruhr University in Bochum . 1973 received his doctorate in ancient history with Géza Alföldy . In 1975 Clauss moved to the Free University of Berlin as a research assistant . In 1976 he received another doctorate in Catholic theology (church history) in Bonn. In 1978, Clauss became an assistant professor and completed his habilitation in ancient history in 1979.

In 1980 he was appointed professor to the chair (C 3) for Ancient History at the University of Siegen . From 1984 he was full professor (C 4) for ancient history at the Catholic University of Eichstätt , from 1987 finally university professor (C 4) for ancient history at the Free University of Berlin, since 1993 at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main. Clauss was on leave from 2005 to 2008 and no longer worked in academic teaching. He retired on October 1, 2008.

Manfred Clauss' research interests are Latin epigraphy , the history of religion , the history of ancient Israel , the history of the Roman Empire and the systematic social history of antiquity . He is editor of the series Gestalten der Antike at the Scientific Book Society . With the epigraphic database Clauss-Slaby he maintains an important online database on ancient epigraphy .

His son Martin Clauss (* 1973) is a medieval historian.
