Franz Alto Bauer

Franz Alto Bauer (* 1965 ) is a German Christian archaeologist and Byzantine art historian .

Franz Alto Bauer studied late antiquity and Byzantine art history, classical archeology and ancient history at the University of Munich from 1986 to 1991 . In 1993 he received his doctorate under Johannes G. Deckers with a thesis on the staging of the monument in the late ancient cities of Rome , Constantinople and Ephesus . From 1997 to 2002 he worked as a consultant for late antiquity and early medieval times at the Rome department of the German Archaeological Institute . There he carried out various archaeological documentation and excavation projects. From 1998 to 1999 he led the excavation of the bishop's church in Ostia together with Michael Heinzelmann . In 2001 he received his habilitation at the University of Basel with a thesis on the image of the city of Rome in the Liber Pontificalis . Since 2006 he has taught as a professor for late antiquity and Byzantine art history at the University of Munich. In his work, Bauer dealt with forms of staging late antique monuments, statues, urban processions and pilgrimages. Another research focus is the architectural, decorative and liturgical staging of the sacred in the early medieval west. He has been a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute since 2006.

Bauer is married to the ancient historian Tanja Scheer .
