Armin Hohlweg

Armin Hohlweg (born April 10, 1933 in Bayreuth ) is a German Byzantinist .

Armin Hohlweg attended schools in Bayreuth and Munich and graduated from the Maximiliansgymnasium in Munich in 1951 . He then studied Protestant theology from the winter semester 1951/52 to the summer semester 1952 at the University of Erlangen , before studying classical philology, history and Byzantine studies at the University of Munich from the winter semester 1952/53 . In September / October 1957 he passed the scientific examination for teaching at secondary schools . He then worked from 1957 to 1963 as an assistant at the Institute for Byzantine Studies and Modern Greek Philology at the University of Munich. On June 28, 1962, he received his doctorate in Munich under Hans-Georg Beck . From 1963 to 1976 he taught Byzantine Studies at the University of Mainz . In 1970 he completed his habilitation in Munich. In 1972 he was appointed Scientific Councilor and Professor in Mainz. From 1976 to 2001 he held the chair for Byzantine and Modern Greek Philology at the University of Munich. From 1978 to 1990 he was editor of the Byzantine Journal .

His research areas include the history of Byzantine philosophy as well as the intellectual history and philosophy of the late Byzantine period. His best-known work is the Tusculum lexicon of Greek and Latin authors of antiquity and the Middle Ages , edited together with Wolfgang Buchwald and Otto Prinz .
