Marcell Restle

Marcell Stanislaus Restle (born January 15, 1932 in Waldsee ; † January 25, 2016 ) was a German Byzantine scholar specializing in Byzantine art history .

Life

Marcell Restle studied art history, Byzantine studies, Christian archeology , church history and Islamic art history at the Universities of Tübingen , Munich and Istanbul . He received his doctorate in 1957 at the LMU with the thesis Art and Byzantine Coin Minting from Justinian I to the Iconoclasm . In 1961/62 he received a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute . In the 1960s, he also carried out on-site research into cave architecture in Cappadocia . In 1968 he received his habilitation and the following year he became a university lecturer, in 1975 an adjunct professor and in 1982 he was appointed professor of Byzantine art history at the University of Munich, succeeding Klaus Wessel . He retired in 1997 and was succeeded by Johannes G. Deckers .

Restle was particularly concerned with the Byzantine art history in today's Turkey, especially in the Cappadocia region . He conducted research on architecture, numismatics and, for example, within the framework of the Tabula Imperii Byzantini , on the historical geography and topography of the Byzantine Empire . With Klaus Wessel he founded the Real Lexicon for Byzantine art in 1963 .
