Albrecht Berger (Byzantinist)

Albrecht Berger (born September 26, 1957 in Munich ) is a German Byzantinist .

Albrecht Berger studied from 1976 to 1981 at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich the subjects of Byzantine Studies , Early Christian and Byzantine Art History and Latin Philology of the Middle Ages. From 1984 to 1989 he was a research assistant at the Free University of Berlin . In 1987 he received his doctorate there with studies on the Patria Konstantinupoleos . In 1988 he received the Ernst Reuter Prize for his dissertation. In 1993 he completed his habilitation in Byzantine Studies at the Free University of Berlin. From 1992 to 1997 he was a consultant for Byzantine Studies at the German Archaeological Institute . Since 2002 he has been teaching as a professor at the University of Munich. Berger has been editor of the Byzantine Journal since 2004 and a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute since 2006.

Albrecht Berger is the son of the Indologist Hermann Berger and brother of the Slavist Tilman Berger . He is the father of the poetry slammer Johannes Berger .
