Hermann Berger (Indologist)

Hermann Berger (born October 17, 1926 in Kötzting ; † January 31, 2005 in Heidelberg ) was a German Indologist .

After studying in Heidelberg, Berger was a university lecturer in Münster from 1960 to 1962; from 1962 to 1964 he worked at the Sanskrit College in Calcutta . From 1964 until his retirement in 1992 he was full professor for Indology at the South Asia Institute at Heidelberg University. From 1981 he was a member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences .

Berger is best known for his research on burushaski , for which he published a three-volume presentation (including a dictionary and texts) in 1998.

He is the father of the Byzantinist Albrecht Berger and the Slavist Tilman Berger . His grandson, Albrecht's son, is the poetry slammer Johannes Berger .
