Norbert Zimmermann (* 1968 in Bonn ) is a German Christian archaeologist .

Zimmermann studied Christian archeology, art history and Italian at the University of Bonn from 1988 to 1994 . From 1994 he continued his studies at the University of Munich , where he received his doctorate in 1998 with a thesis on the painting workshops of Roman catacombs under Johannes Deckers . Since 1999 he has been working at the Institute for Ancient Cultural History of the Austrian Academy of Sciences . In May 2014 he was elected 2nd Director of the Rome Department of the German Archaeological Institute .

His main area of ​​research is Roman and late antique wall painting, for example in the Domitilla catacomb in Rome or the hillside houses of Ephesus .
