Tanja Susanne Scheer (born December 25, 1964 in Munich ) is a German ancient historian .

Tanja Scheer studied Ancient History, Medieval History and Classical Archeology at the University of Munich from 1983 to 1989 . She was a scholarship holder of the German National Academic Foundation , the Gerda Henkel Foundation and Heisenberg scholarship holder of the German Research Foundation . In 1992 she received her doctorate with a thesis on the importance of Greek hero myths in the self-image of cities in Asia Minor under Hatto H. Schmitt and completed her habilitation in 1998 in Munich with The Godhead and Her Image . After teaching at the Universities of Mannheim, Leipzig and Bielefeld and research stays in Rome, at the Center for Hellenic Studies and at the Center for Byzantine Studies at Harvard University in Washington, DC , she taught at the University of Oldenburg from 2004 to 2011 as the successor to Peter Kneißl . In 2010 she received a professorship for Ancient History at the University of Göttingen to succeed Gustav Adolf Lehmann , which she accepted in the 2011 summer semester. Tanja Scheer was a board member of the Mommsen Society from 2009 to 2015 . From 2011 to 2013 she was the first chairwoman and from 2013 to 2015 she was the second chairwoman of the Mommsen Society.

Scheer's main research interests are in the areas of Greek and Roman religious and cultural history, ancient myths and the gender history of ancient times. She is the recipient of the Ausonius Prize , which she received in 2001 for her habilitation thesis. In January 2014 she was elected a full member of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen .

Scheer is married to the Christian archaeologist Franz Alto Bauer .
