Christian August Volquardsen (born October 6, 1840 in Hadersleben , † August 1, 1917 in Kiel ) was a German ancient historian .

Life

Christian August Volquardsen, the son of the rector of the Hadersleben School of Academics, Peter Volquardsen (1797–1852), studied with Alfred von Gutschmid in Kiel . During his studies in 1863 he became a member of the Teutonia fraternity in Kiel . After completing his studies, he was a teacher from 1864 to 1869 at the grammar school in his home town Hadersleben. During this time he was awarded Dr. phil. PhD. He then taught at the grammar school in Potsdam until 1874 and was then appointed full professor of ancient history at the University of Kiel. In the winter semester of 1879 he moved to the University of Göttingen . Here he lost interest in teaching and research. He hardly wrote any more writings and was frowned upon at the seminary because of his alcoholism. That is why the classical philologist Ulrich von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff took over the ancient history courses and tried to get Volquardsen transferred to another university at the ministry. In 1897 Volquardsen managed to return to Kiel with a raise in salary. The professor there, Georg Busolt , moved to Göttingen on Wilamowitz's recommendation. In 1909, Volquardsen was appointed a secret councilor in Kiel and retired in 1912. He primarily dealt with the history of the country.
