Horst Braunert (born March 11, 1922 in Görlitz , † August 19, 1976 in Kiel ) was a German ancient historian .

After military service and brief imprisonment, Horst Braunert began studying classical philology, history, archeology, Egyptology and ancient legal history in Bonn from 1945. Even before his doctorate, he presented the extensive and fundamental essay Foreign Guests at the Ptolemaic Court , in which, based on the dating of the inscriptions on the Hâdra vases , extensive historical statements about the early Ptolemaic Empire are obtained. He received his doctorate from Friedrich Oertel on the population history of Ptolemaic and Roman Egypt. In 1951 Braunert became an assistant at the ancient history seminar in Bonn. In his habilitation thesis from 1959 he dealt with the internal population movement in Egypt.

In 1962, at the instigation of Friedrich Vittinghoff , Braunert was appointed as an adjunct professor and scientific adviser to Kiel and a year later Vittinghoff's successor as full professor of ancient history and director of the Institute for Classical Antiquity. Braunert was elected dean and rector (1968/69) in Kiel. He turned down calls to Tübingen (1966) and Cologne (1974). He died unexpectedly in 1976 at the age of 54. His successor was Frank Kolb .

Braunert's main research interests were the ancient legal and social history, papyrology , the report of deeds ( Res gestae ) of Augustus and Greek history in classical and Hellenistic periods. He was co-editor of Hermes magazine . In terms of science policy, Braunert was active in the West German Rectors' Conference and in the Science Council. Michael Zahrnt is one of his academic students .
