Peter Weiß (historian)

Peter Bernhard Weiß (born August 21, 1943 in Munich ) is a German ancient historian and epigraphist .

From 1966 to 1974 Peter Weiß studied history, classical philology and archeology in Munich and Würzburg , where he received his doctorate in ancient history under Dieter Timpe in 1975 with a thesis on the late ancient Roman imperial court. From then on, Weiss worked as Timpe's assistant or, after his habilitation (with an epigraphic thesis on southern Asia Minor), as senior assistant until he accepted a call at the University of Kiel . From 1987 to 2008 he held the chair for Ancient History there as the successor to Frank Kolb . Appointments to the Humboldt University of Berlinand he turned down the Philipps University of Marburg . The focus of his research is on Roman history in the principate and early late antiquity (2nd to 4th century AD).

Weiß, who has stood out in particular with numerous articles on numismatics and epigraphy and is considered one of the leading experts on Roman military diplomas, was, among other things, a long-term member of the advisory board of the Commission for Ancient History and Epigraphy of the DAI and one of the expert reviewers of the DFG . He was retired in October 2008. His successor in Kiel is Andreas Luther .
