Friedrich Oertel (born May 21, 1884 in Leipzig , † January 15, 1975 in Bonn ) was a German ancient historian .

Friedrich Oertel attended the König-Albert-Gymnasium in his hometown from September 1895 to Easter 1903 , which he left with the school leaving certificate. He then studied classical philology, modern history and political economy in Leipzig . During his studies he became a member of the Association of German Students in Leipzig . He was also active as a journalist until Ulrich Wilcken 's interest in Greek papyri turned him entirely to studying classical studies. His academic teachers included Karl Bücher , Otto Immisch , Karl Lamprecht and Franz Studniczka . In 1911 he received his doctorate with the first part of the liturgy , which after its publication formed the basis for the 1920 habilitation. The work became fundamental for the knowledge of the administration of Egypt and for its political and social development in the centuries of Ptolemaic and Roman rule. After completing his doctorate, Oertel first worked as an assistant to Karl Julius Beloch and, on his return from the First World War, to Johannes Kromayer . During the Weimar Republic , Oertel was a member of the DNVP .

In 1922 he was appointed to the University of Graz . He turned down appointments to Cologne and Freiburg im Breisgau (1926). In 1929 he succeeded Conrad Cichorius in Bonn . Oertel was chairman of the German Association of Historians from 1930 to 1932 . In 1936 he was removed from his position as dean during National Socialism . From 1945 to 1947 he again helped decisively as dean in the re-start of the university. In 1952 he retired. In 1964 Oertel was awarded the Great Federal Cross of Merit.

Oertel's research focus was on ancient economic history, papyrology , Alexander the Great and questions about the order of society and the social requirements of state orders.
