Otto Cuntz

Otto Cuntz (born September 10, 1865 in Stettin , † December 1, 1932 in Graz ) was a German-Austrian ancient historian .

Life

Otto Cuntz, the son of the merchant and industrialist Hermann Cuntz, studied classical philology and history at the universities of Zurich , Strasbourg and Bonn . During his studies he was particularly influenced by the Bonn philologists Franz Bücheler and Hermann Usener and the ancient historian Heinrich Nissen . After graduating as Dr. phil. (1888) he deepened his studies in 1889 with Reinhard Kekulé von Stradonitz and Otto Hirschfeld in Berlin and then went on extensive study trips to Italy, Greece, Spain and France. In 1892 he went to the University of Strasbourg, where he completed his habilitation in ancient history in 1894 .

In 1898, Cuntz was offered a professorship for Roman antiquity at the University of Graz . He was initially an associate professor, then from 1904 a full professor. From 1905 he was a real member of the Austrian Archaeological Institute and curator of the kk central commission for the research and preservation of art and historical monuments . In the academic year 1920/1921 he was rector of the University of Graz. In 1920 he became a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences in Vienna , in 1921 a corresponding member of the Strasbourg Scientific Society at the University of Heidelberg.

His main research interests were ancient geography and topography. He published fundamental studies on Pliny ' naturalis historia , on the Roman itineraries , the Tabula Peutingeriana , the Stadiasmus Maris Magni and on Ptolemy's Geographike Hyphegesis . His annotated text editions and his individual studies, especially those on epigraphy , contributed much to the knowledge of ancient geography.
