Rudolf of Scala

Rudolf Prosper Alois von Scala (born July 11, 1860 in Vienna , † December 9, 1919 in Graz ) was an Austrian ancient historian .

Life

Rudolf von Scala studied classical philology , history and German at the University of Vienna from 1877 to 1882 . In 1877 he became a member of the Upper Austrian Germanic fraternity in Vienna . He completed his studies with the teaching exams in geography and history as well as with the doctorate to Dr. phil. from. After the probationary year in Vienna and a year as a substitute teacher in Salzburg, von Scala deepened his studies in 1884/1885 at the universities of Bonn and Tübingen .

1885 went from Scala to the University of Innsbruck . His habilitation in ancient history in the same year was the first habilitation in this subject at the University of Innsbruck. Initially, von Scala taught as a private lecturer. As such, he received no salary and was dependent on college money and additional income. In 1892 he was appointed associate professor, but it was not until 1894 that he received a regular salary. In 1896 he was finally appointed full professor. This made him the first professor in his subject in Innsbruck. In 1903 the Austrian Archaeological Institute selected him as a corresponding member.

Through his work in academic teaching and self-administration, von Scala gained a certain reputation. In 1903/1904 and 1911/1912 he acted as dean of the philosophical faculty, in 1907/1908 he was elected rector of the university. During his term of office, the Wahrmund affair fell , during which von Scala strongly advocated freedom of teaching at the University of Innsbruck. As a member of the German National Movement , he was also active in journalism and politics (as deputy chairman of the German Mittelstandspartei).

In 1917 von Scala was appointed to the University of Graz and appointed court advisor. His service there was only brief: he died in 1919 at the age of 59 and was buried in the St. Leonhard Cemetery.

As a student of Max Büdinger in Vienna and Alfred von Gutschmid in Tübingen, von Scala wanted to create an overall picture of historical developments in his academic work and to investigate connections. His work was based on evolutionist approaches. He mainly published writings on Greek history with a focus on Greek treaties and Hellenistic historiography ( Polybios ).
