Franz Miltner (born October 28, 1901 in Vienna , Austria-Hungary ; † July 23, 1959 there ) was an Austrian classical archaeologist and ancient historian .

Life

Miltner, the son of a ministerial advisor, studied classical philology and archeology at the University of Vienna from 1921 to 1925 , where he received his doctorate in 1925 with a thesis on Roman ship types. In 1926 or 1927 he became a research assistant at the Austrian Archaeological Institute (ÖAI). He took part in its excavations in Ephesus and directed the excavations in Carnuntum in Lower Austria from 1926 to 1931, and in Alt-Smyrna from 1935 to 1936 .

After completing his habilitation at the University of Vienna in 1932 with a paper on ancient naval warfare and marine life published as a RE article , he succeeded Carl Lehmann-Haupt as associate professor for ancient history in Innsbruck in 1933 . After research stays in Ankara, he received a full professorship at the Institute for Ancient History at the University of Innsbruck in 1939 or 1940, where he was dean from 1939 to 1942. In 1944/45 he did military service.

Miltner, who advocated National Socialism , made among other things after the " Anschluss of Austria " to the German Research Foundation that a racial-historical institute should also be set up in Rome and became a member of the NSDAP .

After the end of World War II, Miltner's closeness to National Socialist ideas led to the loss of his professorship and his early retirement in 1945/46.

Thanks to the efforts of friends and colleagues, Franz Miltner was able to resume his archaeological activity. He had been carrying out excavations on behalf of the OeAI since 1948 and in 1950 took over the excavation management in Aguntum . In 1954 he was employed again as a first class state archaeologist at the ÖAI and directed the excavations in Ephesus from 1954 until his unexpected death in 1959.

Miltner became a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute in 1932 and a corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in 1943 . From 1937 to 1945 he was editor of the magazine Klio (together with Lothar Wickert ) and the Historia Mundi .

The main focus of Miltner's scientific work was on excavations in Asia Minor and at Roman provincial sites in Austria. During the time of National Socialism, he also turned to ancient historical topics, which he treated under current political aspects. He was buried at the Grinzing cemetery .

In 1971 the Miltnerweg in Vienna- Simmering (11th district) was named after him.

His grandson Harold Ian Miltner is a journalist and writer.
