Fritz Eichler (archaeologist)

Fritz Eichler (born October 12, 1887 in Graz , † January 16, 1971 in Vienna ) was an Austrian classical archaeologist .

Life and accomplishments

After Eichler's doctorate in Graz in 1910 and study visits to Berlin, England, Italy, Greece and Asia Minor, he worked at the Antikensammlung of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna from 1913 onwards . From 1933 he was director and from 1935 director of the Antikensammlung. Shortly before his retirement, he was also First Director of the Kunsthistorisches Museum from 1951 to 1952. He had completed his habilitation in 1931 and became an associate professor in 1937; shortly after his retirement, he was appointed full professor of classical archeology at the University of Vienna in 1953 , succeeding Otto Walter and at the same time director of the Austrian Archaeological Institute (ÖAI). Under his direction, the excavations in Ephesus were resumed and the Athens branch of the Austrian Archaeological Institute was reactivated. Eichler held the chair until 1961 and the directorate of the OeAI until 1969. Hedwig Kenner , who had refused the appointment to head the OeAI, was succeeded as Ordinaria , where Hermann Vetters succeeded him. Since 1967 he was a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . His research focused on the history of ancient art from cabaret to sculpture and was closely linked to Ephesus. He was buried at the Vienna Central Cemetery .
