Hermann Fillitz

Hermann Fillitz (born April 20, 1924 in Vienna ) is an Austrian art historian .

Fillitz was head of the Kunstkammer of the Vienna Art History Museum from 1958 to 1964, head of the Austrian Cultural Institute in Rome from 1965 to 1967 , professor of art history at the University of Basel from 1967 to 1974 and, in succession to Otto Pächt, professor of art history from 1974 to 1994 of the University of Vienna . From 1982 to 1990 he was general director and head of the picture gallery of the Kunsthistorisches Museum, where he initiated repairs and modernization.

Fillitz was an advisor to art sponsors, such as the Abegg couple with the Abegg Foundation and the Peter and Irene Ludwig couple , and thus pioneer of the Museum for Modern Art Foundation Ludwig Vienna (initially in the Palais Liechtenstein , later in the Museum Quarter ).

Fillitz is a real member of the philosophical-historical class of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and a foreign member of the Polish Academy of Scholarship in Cracow . In 2003 he received the Austrian Decoration of Honor for Science and Art .
