Lukas Nickel

Lukas Nickel (* 1964 in Halle (Saale) ) is a German art historian , sinologist and university professor .

Life

Lukas Nickel studied modern and classical Sinology at the Humboldt University in Berlin , oriental archeology at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg and East Asian art history at the Ruprecht Karls University in Heidelberg . He did his doctorate in Heidelberg on the graves of the Han period in Luoyang . From 1999 to 2001 he was a curator at the Museum for East Asian Art in Cologne .

After substituting professorships at the University of Zurich , University of London and Heidelberg, Nickel moved to the University of Vienna in September 2016 .

His main research interests are in early and medieval Chinese art , Buddhist art , the interactions of Asian cultures along the Silk Road and the contact between the Chinese and the Hellenistic world. Furthermore, Nickel deals intensively with the founder of the Chinese Empire, Qin Shihuangdi .
