Alois Riegl (born January 14, 1858 in Linz , † June 17, 1905 in Vienna ) was an Austrian art historian , monument conservator and representative of the Vienna School of Art History .

Life

In 1894 he became an associate professor, and in 1897 a full professor of art history at the University of Vienna . From 1902 to 1905, in addition to his professorship, Riegl was general curator of the central commission for the research and preservation of art and historical monuments . His efforts over several years to create an Austrian monument protection law were not very successful, although he was largely prepared to meet the concerns of private monument owners (nobility, church) about the impending financial burdens.

He was buried in an honorary grave in the Vienna Central Cemetery .

Act

Art theory

For art theory, Alois Riegl coined the influential term of artistic will as the defining force of a style epoch . He turned against an art historiography based on value judgments and emphasized the importance of the epochs ( late antiquity ) that were then considered "times of decline" . In his view, ancient art is the starting point for both early medieval and oriental art.

Monument preservation

Riegl's concepts for monument protection also became influential. Similar to Georg Dehio in Germany, Riegl pleaded against the "perfecting" that was widespread in the 19th century and the purifying construction of historical buildings (such as Gothic churches). In contrast to Dehio's rather national view of monuments, Riegl represented a supranational and universalistic concept of monument, the core of which is the age value. (Riegl's ideal value system differentiated present values and memory values. He counted the use value and the relative artistic value among the present values, the historical value and the age value he particularly emphasized.) Among other things, Riegl objected to a peeling off in the case of Diocletian's Palace in Split of the ancient monument and the removal of the later additions, which have also become historical.

Honors

In 1954, Rieglgasse in Vienna- Floridsdorf (21st district) was named after him.
