Markus Ritter (art historian)

Markus Ritter (* 1967 in Braunschweig ) is a German art historian and Islamic scholar who specializes in the history of Islamic art. He has been teaching and researching at the Institute for Art History at the University of Vienna since 2012 .

Ritter studied Islamic art history and archeology, Turkish studies, Iranian studies, Islamic studies and Arabic studies, building history and building research at the Otto Friedrich University in Bamberg , the American University in Cairo and the University of Tehran (MA 1994, Dr. phil 2003). From 2004 to 2009, Ritter was a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute for Iranian Studies at the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna. After teaching positions at the University of Bamberg and the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main , in 2010 he switched to the newly established Assistant Professor of the History of Islamic Art at the Art History Institute of the University of Zurich . In 2012 he was appointed to the new professorship for Islamic Art History at the Institute for Art History at the University of Vienna .
