Artur Rosenauer

Artur Rosenauer (born May 8, 1940 in Sitzendorf an der Schmida , Lower Austria ) is professor emeritus for art history at the University of Vienna and former chairman of the commission for art history of the Austrian Academy of Sciences .

Life

In 1958 Rosenauer began studying art history and archeology at the University of Vienna with Otto Pächt , Otto Demus , Karl Maria Swoboda and Fritz Eichler . In addition, he completed the three-year course at the Institute for Austrian Historical Research from 1959 to 1962 and has been its member since 1962. In 1964 he received his doctorate with a thesis on Domenico Ghirlandaio Dr. phil. and became an assistant at the Art History Institute of the University of Vienna. In 1973 he completed his habilitation with a thesis on the early Donatello , which was published in book form in 1975. After lengthy research stays in Florence (1963, 1968/69 and 1977/78), Rome (1971), London (1967) and Washington (1984 and 1993) he was appointed associate professor in 1977. In 1982 he was appointed full professor of art history at the University of Vienna, since 1990 he has been a corresponding, since 1998 he has been a full member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.

From 1994 to 2004 he was editor of the Vienna Yearbook for Art History. Rosenauer's research focuses on the areas of the Vienna School of Art History, European painting and sculpture of the 15th and 16th centuries, late Gothic and Renaissance in Austria. In terms of cultural policy, Rosenauer worked alongside Sir Ernst Gombrich in the international art historians' protest against the controversial version of the Ortner project for a museum quarter in the former Vienna Trade Fair Palace (with high dimensions and a reading tower ). Rosenauer retired on September 30, 2008. In 2014, he received an appreciation award from the Cardinal Innitzer Prize .
