Manfred Koller

Manfred Koller (* 1941 in Vienna ) is an Austrian restorer and lecturer for technology and conservation, was for many years head of the restoration workshops of the Austrian Federal Monuments Office and is known for numerous teaching assignments and specialist publications at home and abroad.

Life

From 1951 to 1959 Koller attended the Bundesgymnasium Wien 3 and from 1959 to 1962 he studied conservation and technology at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna with Robert Eigenberger , where he worked as an assistant at the master school for conservation from 1962 to 65. At the same time he studied art history and classical archeology at the University of Vienna from 1959 to 1972 under Otto Demus , Renate Wagner-Rieger and Hedwig Kenner . From 1963 to 1965 he completed various restoration internships for wall painting with Franz Walliser and Frambert Wall-Beyerfels in Vienna, Lower Austria and Tyrol. In 1964 a restoration internship for wall painting followed in Padua, Venice and Florence with Leonetto Tintori. From 1965 Manfred Koller was the official restorer in the scientific service of the Federal Monuments Office and headed the Conservation Department of the Federal Monuments Office in the Arsenal (restoration studios with scientific laboratory) from 1980 to 2005. In addition to numerous restorations of his own in the years 1965 to 1979 of paintings, sculptures and wall paintings, he also managed numerous major restoration projects.

Act

Since 1970 Manfred Koller has received numerous teaching positions at domestic and foreign universities and specialist institutions, such as the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, the University of Vienna, the Technical University of Vienna , the University of Applied Arts Vienna , the ICCROM courses in Rome, the State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart , the Dresden University of Fine Arts , the ICCROM Course on Wood Conservation in Oslo, the University of Ljubljana and the Polytechnic University of Valencia . In 1982 Manfred Koller completed his habilitation in technology and conservation at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and has been a second examiner for diploma and doctoral studies at the Institute for Art History at the University of Vienna since 1990. In addition, he gave numerous lectures at scientific conferences abroad.

He worked on numerous exhibition projects on monument preservation and restoration projects. From 1990 to 2006 he organized 20 exhibitions with the Österreichische Galerie Belvedere on “Important works of art: endangered-conserved-presented”, often in connection with international art-historical-restoration colloquia. From 1964 to 2011 Manfred Koller wrote around 570 publications.

From 1970 to 1975 he was editor-assistant for Studies in Conservation, from 1979 to 2011 a founding member of the Austrian Group of the International Institute for Conservation (IIC) as secretary until 2011 and chairman from 1999 to 2011. From 1973 to 2011 he gave the “RESTAURATORENBLÄTTER “As a publication series of the Austria section of the International Institute for Conservation. These were renamed by the new board of IIC Austria from 2014 to "RESTAURATORENBLÄTTER - PAPERS IN CONSERVATION" (with German-English content).
