Robert Eigenberger

Robert Eigenberger (born February 14, 1890 in Sedlitz , Austria-Hungary ; died April 14, 1979 in Vienna ) was an Austrian art historian , restorer and painter and worked at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna from 1916 to 1961 .

Act

Eigenberger studied art history in Prague, Munich, Göttingen and Berlin. In 1913 he was at the German University in Prague with a thesis on the sculptor Adam Krafft and his works doctorate In 1913 to 1918 he worked as an intern, then as an assistant at the KK Central Commission for historic preservation in Vienna operates. He was entrusted with restoration and conservation work on works of art from the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. In the meantime, volunteered to take part in the First World War in May 1915 and was soon released again due to typhoid fever. In 1916 he became curator of the picture gallery of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, in 1922 its director. He rearranged the picture gallery and published the first scientific catalog of the gallery's holdings in 1927. In 1926 he was awarded the title of professor, and from the summer semester of 1927 he taught as an honorary lecturer in art history at the academy. In 1933 he was appointed head of the restoration course set up at the academy and in 1934 he was appointed associate professor and head of the Chair for Conservation and Technology. In 1940 he was appointed full professor.

After the end of the war, Eigenberger was relieved of his functions, but in November 1946 he was given another teaching position at the academy. As rector he headed the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts with short interruptions from 1951 to 1955 and, after his retirement in 1961, was director of the institute for sacred art there from 1961 to 1965 .

Eigenberger was also active as a painter. Since 1919 he participated in art exhibitions under the pseudonym Karl Reigen . From 1928 to 1939 he was a member of the Vienna Secession , in 1930 he was awarded the Austrian State Prize for Painting and in 1939 he became a member of the Wiener Künstlerhaus . In 1960 he received the Golden Laurel of the Künstlerhaus.

He painted landscapes, portraits and religious-allegorical representations, and made a number of copies of Dutch paintings from the 17th century.

After Austria was annexed to the German Reich, he joined the NSDAP in May 1938 , for which he had been working illegally since 1934. He changed his creed from Roman Catholic to believing in God and became a supporting member of the SS and, as a result, NS lecturer leader at the Vienna Academy. In 1940 he received the medal in memory of March 13, 1938 for his "National Socialist activities during the illegal period". In 1942 he was awarded the Silver Loyalty Service Medal.

As air protection and salvage officer at the academy, he was responsible for securing the collections during the Second World War . Many of the works he categorized as less valuable that remained in the Academy building were destroyed by a bomb hit on March 12, 1945 or are considered lost. Around 120 of the outsourced works of art were lost to looting.
