The Institution Notre-Dame [ɛ̃stitysjɔ̃ nɔtʁədam] is a traditional private school in the French department Nord , region Hauts-de-France . The foundation by Catholic clergy goes back to 1850. The facility is divided into the Collège Notre-Dame and Lycée Notre-Dame . The former is in Saint-Saulve , the latter in the neighboring town of Valenciennes .

history

While the French school system was centralized by the state under the rule of Napoleon Bonaparte , privately owned secondary schools were also allowed from 1850. In the same year, the Collège Notre-Dame opened in Valenciennes, initially with only five students . In 1853, due to a lack of space, the school moved into the building on Rue des Capucins , which is still in use today.

In 1973 the school merged with the Catholic educational institution Institution Notre-Dame de la Garde in the neighboring parish of Saint-Saulve. The Collège Notre-Dame has continued there since 1982 , while the school in Valenciennes continues as the Lycée Notre-Dame .

The chapel of the school in Valenciennes in the style of the Gothic Revival was designed by Louis Dutouquet and inaugurated 1857th Two transepts were added later. It was extensively renovated between 2016 and 2017.
