Éric Dupond-Moretti (born Dupond ; born April 20, 1961 in Maubeuge , Département Nord ) is a French lawyer and non-party politician. As a criminal defense attorney, he is known for a high number of acquittals for his clients. He has been Minister of Justice of France since July 2020.

Life

His father, Jean-Pierre Dupond, was a metalworker from Avesnois in northern France , while his mother, Elena Moretti, was from Italy and worked as a cleaning lady. He has French and Italian citizenship. His father died at the age of four and he was raised by his mother. At the Lycée Catholique Notre-Dame in Valenciennes , he passed the Baccalauréat . The unexplained death of his grandfather in 1957 and the news of the 1976 execution of Christian Ranucci (one of the last executed death sentences in France) motivated him to become a lawyer. After studying law at the University of Lille II , he was sworn in as a lawyer in Douai in the Nord département in 1984 .

As a criminal defense lawyer, he obtained an acquittal for his clients in 133 cases before the cour d'assises (the jury court responsible for serious crimes). This unusually high number of acquittals earned him the nickname "acquittator" (from acquitter , "acquittal") in the press . Dupond-Moretti received the first major public attention in 2004 in the trial of an alleged child abuse ring in Outreau . His most prominent clients included doctor Jean-Louis Muller, who was accused of killing his wife and disguised it as a suicide, and Abdelkader Merah, who was convicted of complicity in the 2012 series of attacks in Midi-Pyrénées . After three decades of membership in the Lille Bar Association, Dupond-Moretti moved to Paris in 2016, where he opened a joint law firm with Antoine Vey . With a constitutional complaint (question prioritaire de constitutionnalité) before the Conseil constitutionnel , he achieved the obligation for juries to give reasons for their judgments in 2018.

During a trial in 1991 he met his first wife Hélène. With this he has two children. The marriage ended in divorce and since 2016 he has been in a relationship with the singer Isabelle Boulay .

Éric Dupond is a boxing fan, likes to go hunting and loves bullfighting.

Political positions

Éric Dupond-Moretti supported Martine Aubry in the local elections in 2008. Three years later, he signed a letter in the Liberation newspaper to support her in the presidential election. In 2013 he was to be accepted into the Legion of Honor . He refused because he despised the institution and it had become a symbol of nepotism .

In May 2015, Dupond-Moretti spoke out in favor of banning the right-wing extremist Front National . However, he indicated that they would regroup after the dissolution.

On July 6, 2020, President Emmanuel Macron appointed Dupond-Moretti as Minister of Justice in the Castex cabinet . In this position he is also the seal keeper of France .
