Saint-Saulve is a French municipality with 11,207 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Nord in the region of Hauts-de-France . It belongs to the arrondissement Valenciennes and since the canton reform 2015 to the canton Valenciennes (previously canton Anzin ).

geography

Saint-Saulve is located in the northern French coalfield on the Scheldt (French: Escaut ). It is surrounded by the neighboring municipalities of Bruay-sur-l'Escaut in the north-west, Onnaing in the north-east, Estreux in the south-east, Marly in the south-east and Valenciennes in the east.

history

The name of the settlement comes from a bishop of Angoulême who was martyred around 800 . A basilica was donated by Charlemagne in his memory . In the 10th century a Benedictine priory was built here , which was elevated to an abbey in the 17th century.
