Crespin town hall

Crespin is a French commune with 4,532 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Nord in the region of Hauts-de-France . Crespin belongs to the arrondissement of Valenciennes and the canton of Marly (until 2015: canton of Condé-sur-l'Escaut ). The inhabitants are called Crespinois .

geography

Crespin is located on the edge of the Scarpe-Schelde Regional Nature Park (French: Parc naturel régional Scarpe-Escaut ) on the Hogneau River , into which the Aunelle flows, and on the border with Belgium . Crespin is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Saint-Aybert in the north, Hensies (Belgium) in the northeast, Quiévrain (Belgium) in the southeast, Quiévrechain in the south, Quarouble in the west and Thivencelle in the northwest.

The A2 autoroute and the former route nationale 354 (today: D654) run through the municipality .

history

With the Christianization of the area around 650, monks around St. Landelin came to the area and built the Crespin monastery from 651, possibly later around 670 .

Located in the northern French coal basin, mining developed a certain degree of prosperity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
