Bouchain ( Dutch : evil ) is a French municipality with 3952 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in Nord in the region of Hauts-de-France . It belongs to the arrondissement of Valenciennes and the canton of Denain .
geography
The place is located on the canalized Scheldt , which was expanded for large shipping. In the municipality, the rivers Sensée and the Scheldt themselves flow into the canal .
history
Bouchain (formerly called Bulcinum, Bilcinius, Bolcen, Bochanium, Bouçain, Bouchin and Bouchaing) is first mentioned in 899, when King Charles III. donated it to the monastery of Saint-Amand . Later Bouchain belonged to the Counts of Ostervant , who made Bouchain a lordship for 76 villages; In the Middle Ages, the place was expanded into a fortress on the border between France and the Holy Roman Empire .
In 1384 Bouchain came with Flanders to Burgundy , then to the Habsburgs . It was conquered from the Spanish Netherlands in 1676 by the French, who kept it in the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 . In the War of the Spanish Succession , the French lost Bouchain to the Allies in 1711 when the city of Marlborough was captured, but recaptured it in 1712. In the Treaty of Utrecht (1713) Bouchain came to France permanently.
