Escautpont ( Flemish : Scheldebrug ) is a French municipality with 4192 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Nord in the region of Hauts-de-France . Escautpont belongs to the arrondissement of Valenciennes and the canton of Anzin . The inhabitants are called Escautpontois (es) .
geography
Escautpont is located on the edge of the Regional Nature Park Scarpe-Schelde (French: Parc naturel régional Scarpe-Escaut ) on the canalized Scheldt near the border with Belgium . Escautpont is surrounded by the neighboring parishes of Odomez in the north, Fresnes-sur-Escaut in the east and northeast, Onnaing in the southeast, Bruay-sur-l'Escaut in the south and southwest, Raismes in the west and Bruille-Saint-Amand in the northwest.
history
The historical name pons Scaldis indicates the early crossing of the Scheldt. Presumably it was a Roman bridge construction on the Roman road from Bavay to Boulogne-sur-Mer.
