It belongs to the arrondissement of Valenciennes and the canton of Denain (until 2015: canton of Bouchain ). The inhabitants are called Émerchicourtois (es) .

Émerchicourt is about 19 kilometers west-southwest of Valenciennes . Émerchicourt is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Aniche in the north, Abscon in the east and northeast, Mastaing in the east and southeast, Marquette-en-Ostrevant in the south and southeast, Marcq-en-Ostrevent in the south and southwest, Monchecourt in the west and Auberchicourt in the northwest.
