The nature reserve Alter Hagen near Willingen with a size of 143.55  hectares is located south of Willingen in the Waldeck-Frankenberg district . The nature reserve (NSG) was designated in 1989 because of its importance for botany and wildlife. The NSG is located within the Diemelsee Nature Park . The NSG is part of the FFH area NSG complex near Willingen (DE 4718-301). The southern and western borders are on the state border of Hesse . The national border forms a watershed here. To the west of the NSG is the NSG Neuer Hagen in North Rhine-Westphalia . The NSG borders directly on the Grebensteine ​​nature reserve near Willingen in the north and on the Jägers Weinberg nature reserve in the east .

Area description

NSG is the source and valley of the upper course of the Itter with side valleys. There are swampy floodplains, moor meadows and forest areas. In the forest there are areas with moor birch forest and remnants of the former beech forest rich in ferns and bear lobes . There are red spruce afforestations in parts of the NSG . Since 1987 the grassland areas in the NSG have been grazed by the Bigger Josefsheim of the Josefs Society with Heidschnucken , a special breed of sheep from the Lüneburg Heath , and goats.

Protection purpose

According to the nature reserve designation, the area was designated as a nature reserve due to its importance for botany and wildlife. As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
