The nature reserve Grotenberg bei Welleringhausen with a size of 19.77  hectares is located north of the village outskirts of Welleringhausen in the municipality of Willingen in the Waldeck-Frankenberg district . The nature reserve (NSG) was designated in 1992 because of its importance for botany and wildlife. The NSG is located within the Diemelsee Nature Park .

Area description

NSG is the southern slope of the Grotenberg. Acid-acid silicate grasslands that are characteristic of the eastern Sauerland mountain range can be found on drained diabase sites on an area of ​​ten hectares. The silicate grassland on the Grotenberg was created through extensive grazing with sheep. At the end of the 1950s, the upper slope of the Grotenberg was planted with spruce. As part of the maintenance measures, spruce trees have been removed in recent years and extensive grazing with heather sheep is taking place.

Flora and fauna

The breeding species were whitethroat , shrike and Neuntöter further 12 Baumpieper - and 6 Wiesenpieper found -Reviere. 11 species of butterflies were found. 16 types of beetles were detected. The wart-biter was found among the 6 species of grasshopper .

A total of 163 vascular plant species were identified in the NSG. Lichen such as various reindeer lichen and shield lichen are widespread on the rocks in the NSG.

Protection purpose

According to the nature reserve designation, the area was designated as a nature reserve due to its importance for botany and wildlife. As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
