The nature reserve Jägers Weinberg with a size of 25.36 hectares is located south of Willingen and southwest of Usseln in the Waldeck-Frankenberg district . The nature reserve (NSG) was designated in 1979. The NSG is located within the Diemelsee Nature Park . The NSG borders directly on the Alter Hagen nature reserve near Willingen in the west .
Surname
The unusual name is probably due to its historical use. The area that belonged to Usseln was the most distant agricultural area with sheep grazing and mowing. In the local dialect, the mountain was initially called Witterberg (= distant mountain). The name Witterberg changed to Weinberg and the addition Jägers can be traced back to a previous property owner.
Area description
NSG is a moorland with birch break forest. In the birch quarry forest there are sparse stands of downy birch (probably a bastard with the hanging birch), with bizarre trees with often multi-stemmed growth. On the southwestern edge of the birch forest there is a small population of the Carpathian birch. Marsh violets, fever clover and marsh blood-eye are found in the moss cushions. The common cranberry has its last occurrence here in Waldeck-Frankenberg. In the drier edge areas of the peat birch forest there are occurrences of forest grove and European seven-star.
Protection purpose
According to the nature reserve designation, the area was designated as a nature reserve because of its importance for botany. As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
