Arnold Niggli

Arnold Niggli (born December 20, 1843 in Aarburg , Canton Solothurn , † May 30, 1927 in Zurich ) was a Swiss advocate , town clerk , music historian and music critic .

Niggli attended grammar school in Aarau and studied law in Heidelberg , Berlin and Zurich. He then worked as a lawyer. Niggli passed the Aargau state examination in 1865 as an advocate. From 1866 to 1875 he was town clerk in Aarburg and from 1874 to 1876 he was a member of the Grand Council. He also worked as a judge at the district court of Zofingen and was town clerk of Aarau from 1875 to 1908.

From 1891 to 1898, Niggli was an editor at the Swiss music newspaper . He published music reviews and historical writings on the history of music in Switzerland, including several musicians' biographies. Various associations made Niggli an honorary member. For example, the Swiss Federal Singers' Association , the Swiss Tonkünstlerverein , the Cäcilienverein Aarau , the Harmonie in Zurich , the Basel men's choir and the Schubertbund in Vienna .

His son was the composer and music teacher Friedrich Niggli .
